Life Cycle Assessment of High-Performance Railway Infrastructure, Analysis of Superstructures in Tunnels and on Open Tracks

Almost 25% of the environmental pollution, measured by indicator global greenhouse emissions, is emitted transport. Changes in mobility behavior population will be essential if 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and goals EU Commission’s Green Deal are to attained. Accordingly, existing infrastructure has transform into a sustainable transport through further optimizations future. Therefore, continuous improvements designs, materials, processes crucial achieving long-term sustainability. This study investigates different superstructures with method life cycle assessment using example emerging high-performance at Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). The analyzes all relevant stages (A1–C4) validates effects service lifetimes superstructure elements on open track tunnel. results, which presented form GWP, AP, NRCED, show that there reduction potential, especially stage use. As more frequent modernization cycles associated remanufacturing account for significant proportion total impact, lifetime extending optimization products yields ecological footprint.
